HEMPSTEAD (WABC) – A 12-year-old girl has died after being shot in the head by a stray bullet while she was in her home in Hempstead on Friday night.

Dejah Joyner was inside the living room of her family’s home on Dartmouth Street when the bullet pierced through the front window and struck her in the head.

Police are searching for the gunman, and a $75,000 reward is now being offered for any information leading to an arrest.

“We are going to aggressively investigate this case. We will turn over every rock, and we will find the person responsible for this,” says Thomas C. Krumpter of the Nassau County Police Department.

Investigators believe someone on the street opened fire in front of the two-story home, but it is unclear whether the girl was the intended target.

Acting Nassau County Prosecutor Madeline Singas released a statement:
“Dejah Joyner’s life was violently cut short before she even had a chance to live it — this is a heartbreaking tragedy and we will do everything in our power to make sure that the gunman is brought to justice. Law enforcement is working around the clock on this case, but we also need the public’s help to help us hold Dejah’s killer accountable. If you know something, please call the Crime Stoppers tipline at 800-244-TIPS FREE.”
