A 16-year-old boy was shot to death and his 13-year-old cousin was hit three times after assailants fired a barrage of bullets near the Marcy Houses complex in Brooklyn Friday night, authorities said.
Dontea (Ted) Bascom died at Kings County Hospital after he was shot in the groin on Park Ave. near Marcy Ave. at 7:15 p.m. as he and his cousin Michael Parnell sat on a bench at the public housing complex, witnesses said.
“He was a good kid, man! A good boy!” Bascom’s unconsolable father Sherwayne Bascom, 44, said about the ROADS Charter School student. “He went over there to visit some girls. I’m lost.”
Bascom’s mother was so distraught that she collapsed into a wheelchair at the hospital, family members said.
Michael was hit twice in the chest and once in the leg, police sources said. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and was expected to survive.
Witnesses said up to six shots were fired, staining the balmy Friday evening with the smell of gunsmoke.
“There was a pop, pop, pop, pop — between four and six shots,” said Bishop Robert Shaw, 46, who runs a nearby church. “One kid was shot in the chest. He was on his side like he was in his mother’s womb.”
Bascom’s older sister Raya Mayo, 23, said the teen doted on his 2-year-old niece Amila.
“He loved his niece,” Mayo said. “My daughter was his world.”
Fourteen suspects were taken into custody Friday night as a heavily armed team of Emergency Service Unit cops stormed a first floor apartment one of the gunmen was seen running into, officials said. No charges had been filed early Saturday.
Shaw said the gunmen ran off just as police arrived.
“The cops came pouring in and shooters ran out,” he said. “They crossed each other.”
A ripped-open backpack and a pair of discarded sneakers marked the violent scene, witnesses aid.
Cops were hampered in their search by Michael, who so far has refused to cooperate with detectives, police sources said.
The gunplay may be revenge for another shooting in Bed-Stuy on Sunday where two people were injured, the source added.
