At a Friday night NFL preseason game, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the National Anthem. The following morning Kaepernick said that he is “not going to show pride for a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” Kaepernick added, ““To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.” The 49ers issued a statement saying the team respects a players right to “choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem.”
