The Decepticons: History Of The Legendary NY Street Gang By General Steele

If you lived through the late 80’s early 90’s in NYC you’ve heard of the ‘Decepticons’. Some might think I’m talking about the infamous villains led by Megatron from the cartoon ‘The Transformers’. The names of the actual people were the same, but nothing about these men walking around NYC was a cartoon. General Steele (a member of the crew Deceps aka The Decepticons) from the legendary group Smif-N-Wessun gives us a brief history on the street gang known as the ‘Decepeticons’

Decepticons or Decepts or Hammer Gang were a 1980s street gang based in Brooklyn, New York named after the villains in the Transformers franchise, the Decepticons.

The Decepticons were founded in 1985 at the elite high school Brooklyn Technical High School. At one point in the 1980s, the Decepticons were the largest gang in New York City. Five Decepticons were arrested on a violent attack they committed. In 1988 the Decepticons were charged with 43 robberies, mostly of jewelry and clothing. Their ages varied from 15 to 22. Despite the fact that the gang consisted of fewer than 60 members, their presence in New York City was described as mythical The leader of the Decepticons was eventually shot in the head.
