From December 2015 to September 2016, there were 56 cases of E. coli-related illnesses reported across the US related to the consumption of raw flour. Last year, the FDA put out an advisory against eating raw dough, while offering these tips:
Don’t eat cookie or cake mix, batter, or dough products that are supposed to be cooked. Follow directions for cooking at proper temperatures and times. Wash hands, counters, and utensils thoroughly after contact with flour and raw products. Be aware that flour may spread easily due to its powdery nature. Follow label directions to chill products containing raw dough promptly after purchase until baked.
